The Unique Origin and Message Behind “Semper Gumby

Few phrases capture the spirit of resilience, flexibility, and adaptability quite like “Semper Gumby.” A twist on the Latin phrase “Semper Fidelis”, which translates to “Always Faithful” and is famously associated with the United States Marine Corps, “Semper Gumby” brings forth an interesting fusion of tradition and pop culture. At Six Pillar Lending, this phrase holds particular resonance, given that our co-founders are proud disabled Marine Corps Veterans. In this article, we delve into the history of “Semper Gumby” and why it holds so much significance for our organization.

The Birth of “Semper Gumby”

To understand the origin of “Semper Gumby”, we first need to acknowledge its two components: “Semper” and “Gumby”.

“Semper”, as mentioned, is Latin for “always”. It is most known in the context of “Semper Fidelis”, the motto of the U.S. Marine Corps. The Marines have been using this motto since the 1800s to exemplify their unwavering loyalty and dedication to duty.

“Gumby”, on the other hand, refers to a green clay humanoid character that first appeared in the 1950s. Created by Art Clokey, Gumby became a cultural icon, known for his stop-motion animated TV series. Gumby’s most distinct feature, apart from his emerald hue, is his incredible flexibility. He can stretch, twist, and bend into any shape or form without breaking.

Combine these two, and “Semper Gumby” translates to “Always Flexible”.

Why “Semper Gumby”?

Life is unpredictable and filled with challenges and obstacles that require one to adapt and overcome. The military, especially branches like the Marine Corps, often faces rapidly changing scenarios that demand quick thinking, adaptability, and the capacity to shift strategies at a moment’s notice.

This is where “Semper Gumby” comes into play. It’s a colloquialism used within military circles to remind servicemen and women of the importance of remaining flexible, both in combat situations and in personal life. The unexpected will happen, plans will change, and situations will evolve. Instead of resisting or breaking under pressure, “Semper Gumby” encourages individuals to embrace change and adapt.
